What Makes Great Savoury Afternoon Tea for Offices

Savoury afternoon tea stands are a game changer for office breaks. Unlike sweet snacks like muffins and cakes that might leave you crashing after an hour, savoury bites deliver a steady stream of energy, helping your team stay sharp and productive. Whether it's a quick pick-me-up during a busy meeting or a much-needed snack during a conference, savoury options are both satisfying and practical.

In a corporate setting, ease of eating is key. Savoury snacks are ideal for these environments—they're simple to handle, mess-free, and perfect for those moments when you need something tasty but don't want to interrupt the flow of the event. Plus, savoury options can cater to a wide range of dietary preferences, from Halal to vegetarian or gluten-free, ensuring everyone is covered.

Why Savoury Works Better in Corporate Settings

  • Protein-packed bites keep energy levels steady and minds sharp, unlike sugary treats that lead to a quick crash.
  • Easy to eat while engaging in conversation or taking part in meetings—no need to juggle cutlery or plates.
  • Offers more inclusivity, catering to dietary needs like Halal, vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and more.

Must-Have Qualities in Savoury Office Bites

  • Bite-sized, so everyone can grab and go without fuss.
  • A variety of flavours so that there's something for everyone.
  • Room-temperature friendly to keep them ready whenever you need them.
  • A balance of textures—think crunchy bites and soft, comforting flavours for a full experience.

Classic Savoury Tea Options with an Upgrade

Bake n Bite Quiche

You can't go wrong with a classic, but why not upgrade it? Bake n Bite quiches can be the perfect finger food idea for your next high tea office spread. These bite-sized quiches, available in Spinach & Feta and Quiche Lorraine flavours and served warm with tomato sauce, add a touch of elegance to any afternoon tea spread. The beauty of quiches is in their versatility—the vegetarian option, like spinach & feta, provides an inclusive choice for those with dietary restrictions, while still delivering a rich, creamy texture that satisfies.

Grilled Vegetables & Spinach Frittata

For those looking for a gluten-free and vegetarian-friendly option, the grilled vegetables & spinach frittata is an excellent addition to your spread. Light yet satisfying, it's a savoury afternoon tea option that offers a refreshing twist on a classic frittata. With a combination of fresh, grilled veggies and free-range eggs cooked to perfection, this dish caters to various dietary needs, making it an ideal choice for an inclusive office catering experience.

How to Build the Perfect Savoury Afternoon Tea Spread

Creating the perfect spread for afternoon tea at your office or corporate event requires careful consideration. You want to offer a variety of flavours and textures while keeping everything practical for your setting.

1. Mix of Textures

  • Soft buns: Think bao buns filled with crispy chicken and fresh vegetables.
  • Crisp baguettes: Mini soft baguettes with fillings like pulled beef or curried egg.
  • Creamy quiche: Elegant mini quiches or frittatas offering a rich texture.

This combination keeps your spread exciting and ensures that every bite feels different.

2. Dietary Balance

Ensure you include options that cater to various dietary needs. A vegetarian and gluten-free option is a must for inclusivity.

  • Vegetarian option: Grilled vegetable frittata or spinach & feta quiche.
  • Gluten-free option: Many savoury snacks like mini pizzas or bao buns can be made gluten-free.

3. Room-Temperature Friendly

All items should be easy to serve and enjoy at room temperature. This is an important element of afternoon tea spreads at offices and corporate events where hot plates are inconvenient. No need for reheating; everything should be fresh, tasty, and simple to serve.

4. Serve with Tea & Coffee

Pairing your savoury items with the right beverages is essential for creating a well-rounded afternoon tea experience. Offering a selection of teas and coffee will satisfy different tastes.

  • Tea selections: Earl Grey, Green Tea, or Herbal options.
  • Coffee: Offer both regular and decaf to cater to all preferences.

5. Portion Size

When planning your portions, remember to keep them manageable. Aim for 2–3 pieces per person if you're also serving other snacks or drinks. This way, everyone can sample a variety without overindulging.

Serving & Presentation Tips

  • Use platters: Arrange savoury items neatly on large platters to ensure easy access for your guests.
  • Label clearly: Add labels indicating vegetarian and gluten-free options so guests can choose with ease.
  • Provide essentials: Include plates, napkins, ketchup, mayonnaise, and serving tongs for a convenient, hygienic experience.
  • Offer drinks: Serve plain, sparkling, or cucumber water alongside tea and coffee to keep your guests refreshed and hydrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many savoury items should you plan per person?

When it comes to portioning, aim for 4–6 savoury pieces per person if it's the main focus of your afternoon tea. This will ensure everyone has enough to feel satisfied without going overboard. If you're offering a mix of sweet and savoury, you can reduce the number to 2–3 pieces per person, giving guests a chance to enjoy different treats.

Are savoury options better served warm or at room temperature?

For office environments, room temperature is ideal. It keeps the food easy to serve and mess-free, especially during busy meetings or networking events. Warm food can be tricky to manage, and room temperature ensures everyone can enjoy it without hassle.

What drinks pair well with savoury afternoon tea?

The right drink can elevate your savoury afternoon tea experience. Here are some great options:

  • Classic tea: Earl Grey, English Breakfast, or even a refreshing green tea.
  • Coffee: Regular or decaf to cater to everyone.
  • Cold water: Helps balance out the richness of the savoury treats.
  • Herbal teas: Options like peppermint or chamomile also complement savoury bites nicely.

How can I cater for dietary preferences?

To ensure everyone feels included, always provide at least one vegetarian and one gluten-free option. For example, include a spinach and feta quiche for vegetarians and a grilled vegetable frittata for gluten-free guests. You can also provide an ingredient list for all items, so everyone can make informed choices based on their needs.

How can I make my savoury items stand out at a corporate event?

Consider adding a unique twist to classic items. For example, swap the traditional white bread finger sandwiches or prawn and sausage rolls for something more contemporary, like mini pizzas with gourmet toppings. Adding bold flavours like tangy dill can make all the difference in creating a memorable, standout afternoon tea experience.

Final Tips for Office Afternoon Tea Success

When planning your office afternoon tea, think about the duration of your meeting or event—you don't want to overdo it, but you also want to make sure everyone has enough to snack on. Keep portions in line with the event length, so your guests stay satisfied without feeling stuffed. Clear labels are essential, especially for those with dietary preferences. No one wants to guess what's gluten-free or vegetarian! And if your team is known for their sweet tooth, add a small sweet bite like a mini tart or sweet scones served with jam and cream—it's the perfect finishing touch.

We ordered a selection of platters for our executive morning tea and, unfortunately, were quite disappointed with the quality and portion sizes. For a total spend of $450, the food provided was enough for a maximum of ten people. The muffins were extremely small—about the size of a teaspoon—and the fruit platter consisted mostly of half a watermelon with a few kiwifruit and orange slices. Overall, everything was far smaller and less substantial than expected. On a positive note, the order arrived on time and the food was still warm, which we appreciated. However, given the cost, the value and portion sizes fell well below expectations. .

Food is okay. But delivery is not up to standard. For a catering business, quality of food and on time delivery is essential. It was so stressful waiting for delivery. The delivery was so late and the driver called a wrong person.....:(

I paid over $249 for an order of sandwiches, rice balls and party pies. The quality of the order was extremely disappointing. The food was borderline inedible, with the texture of cardboard. Hardly and filling in the sandwich, Was it left out on the benchtop overnight? The quality would be unacceptable for a $5 special from the supermarket, let alone premium priced supposedly gourmet sandwiched. Gluten free does not translate to dry and rough. I hope this is not reflective of the standard of your catering, as I would hate for other customer to have the same experience.”

EXCELLENT PRODUCTS AS USUAL. I would certainly recommend for any occasion - thus far I have done a "finger food" package for a cocktail party and just recently a selection of "morning tea" goodies (sandwiches and cakes) for a birthday high tea. YUM YUM YUM. Well packaged and presented and extremely easy to order and pick up. My photo doesn't really do the goodies justice and the stuff displayed wasn't even the half of it :)

I'm very impressed with the catering. Easy online ordering process and I only gave them two days notice. The quality of the food is very good and was brought to our door on time, hot and ready to serve. Will use them again.

I needed some finger sandwiches and mini cakes for a recent funeral I was organising and googled finger sandwiches and up Catering Zone. It was easy to select what I wanted, see how the food was presented and cost. Ordered before 3pm for next day delivery. By the time I arrived at the venue the orders had already arrived. Easy! I would definitely use Catering Zone again. Even their request for a review was easy, only two questions and summit.

We needed to organise a wedding in 3 weeks due to a family members terminal diagnosis and ordered online for pick up. The food surpassed all expectations and was just amazing. Our order included chocolate covered strawberries and they were flavourful and everyone enjoyed them. We got cannoli which were large, crunchy and yummy. We got a selection of sandwiches and brioche rolls and all the fillings were delicious. The pies and sausage rolls were flavourful and our guests loved them. Thank you so much catering zone for making our wedding memorable with your wonderful food! We will absolutely be recommending your business to family and friends.

I often require catering for hospital events and came across Catering Zone. The food is exactly as you see it on the website. The range available is incredible and the food has been fantastic and well received by customers. It presents very well. I would add that if you're ordering outside the delivery area then to give them a call as they can sort something out if it's not too far or charge accordingly.
